Welcome!
Part of being a good citizen is participating in the growth of your community. For several years now, the State of Utah has been attempting to relocate the Utah State Prison from the Draper site it has resided since the early 1950's. Throughout this process, several studies have been conducted many which have concluded that relocation would be cost prohibitive. We the citizens of Tooele county are OPPOSED to the prison being relocated to our county for many reasons, including:
- Inadequate access to water to support the needs of a prison
- Inadequate medical resources to support the needs of a prison population
- A State Prison pays no property taxes which reduces the already small Tooele County taxable land ratio of 11% even further
- Proximity to the public court in Salt Lake (32 miles in Tooele vs. 19 from the current prison site). This assumes the location of the Miller property - the distance would be even further if sites further west in the county were considered.
- Proximity to existing DOC employee residences and families of inmates
We encourage you to read the studies (past and current) and make up your own mind if relocation is a prudent use of taxpayer money. Please join us in signing a petition opposing relocation to Tooele County and engage your local representatives to voice your concerns.
